What is Thanis?

Thanis is a section-level writing analysis tool.

Thanis does not generate new paragraphs, scenes, or arguments. Thanis evaluates what already exists on the page.

Thanis reads a passage and returns a structured evaluation of stability, clarity, and internal coherence. It is closer to an editorial reading than a collaborator, and it is not a traditional grammar checker.

Thanis is built to answer questions like:
• Where does the passage lose control?
• What feels unstable to release as-is?
• What kind of revision will actually move the piece forward?

Quick Start Guide

Accepted Answer

1. Paste a draft into the Studio (or upload a .docx).
2. Select a Mode (Creative Writer or Academic).
3. Click "Analyze".

Thanis is not trying to make a draft sound generic or polished. It is designed to show what the draft is doing, where it is strong, where it slips, and what a reader is likely to misunderstand.

The Studio returns four scores, plus a Summary reflecting what Thanis understood from the text.

Versioning, History & Exports

Accepted Answer

The Studio is designed to support real drafting. Iteration is expected, and the workflow preserves a trail.

History & Versioning
Each time "Analyze" runs, Thanis saves a snapshot of that version. Revisions can be re-scanned and compared across versions.

Rollback
If a revision takes the piece in the wrong direction, the History tab can restore earlier versions.

PDF Export
A full Story Development Report can be exported for any version. This provides a documented revision trail and can be shared with a professor, editor, or collaborator.

What happens when I click Analyze?

You are still the one making the decisions. Thanis is there to sharpen the read, not replace it.

What gets saved automatically?

Each time you run an analysis, Thanis saves a snapshot of that version.

That matters more than it sounds like it does. Good drafting is rarely linear. You try something, it helps, it hurts, it solves one problem and creates another. History gives you a trail back through those decisions.

If a revision takes the piece somewhere you do not want to keep, you are not forced to pretend the earlier version never existed.

What’s the difference between Analyze and Deep Trace?

Deep Trace looks for habits that keep showing up across earlier saved work.

When should I re-run the analysis?

After a real revision, not after every tiny change.

If you move a comma and run it again, you are not learning much. If you cut a paragraph, clarify a turn, change the ending, or rebuild a section, then the new read is worth seeing.

The point is not to keep chasing the tool. The point is to use the tool when the draft has actually changed.

What does Export include?

Export gives you a record of the analysis attached to that version of the draft.

That can be useful if you want to track how a piece developed over time, keep a documented revision trail, or share the report with a professor, editor, or collaborator.

The value is not just the file itself. It is the fact that the thinking behind the revision is preserved with it.

Start here: what the scores are (and aren’t)

The scores are not a grade on a person. They are a read on the draft that was submitted, in the context that was selected.

A lower score usually means the draft contains friction. That friction can be ambiguity, logical leaps, tonal drift, or instability that makes a reader stumble.
A higher score means the draft holds together, and the reader can follow intent without extra effort.

Use the scores like a dashboard:
• Find the weakest area first
• Fix one issue with intention
• Re-run the analysis and compare.

The Summary: the Mirror Test

Accepted Answer

The Summary is the fastest diagnostic.

Thanis describes the passage in a few sentences. If the summary matches the writing’s intent, the passage is usually communicating clearly. If it does not, the text is often leaving too much implicit.

Common reasons the Summary misses:
• Pronouns or speakers are unclear
• The emotional or logical turn is not anchored
• Key context is withheld too long
• A metaphor is carrying more load than it can support

Revision goal: adjust the writing until the Summary matches the intent.

Clarity: precision & orientation

Accepted Answer

Clarity measures how cleanly words transfer an image or idea to a reader.

It looks for points where a reader has to pause to figure out who is speaking, what is happening, or what a phrase conveys.

High Clarity often means:
• concrete nouns
• active verbs
• clear referents (who, what, where)
• sentences that resolve rather than drift

Low Clarity often shows up as:
• abstract phrasing without anchors
• overloaded sentences
• slippery "this/that/it" references
• shifts in speaker or time without signposting

Structure: logic & pacing

Structure evaluates how the piece moves.

It checks the sequence and linkage. Does idea A lead to idea B, or is there a gap the reader has to bridge on their own?

It also checks pacing. If everything has the same weight and tempo, the draft can feel flat even if the sentences are strong. Good structure varies pressure: short where it should hit, long where it should unfold.

High Structure means the draft moves with purpose.
Low Structure often means drift, missing turns, or unearned jumps.

Mechanics: syntax & rhythm

Accepted Answer

Mechanics is a cadence score. This is not traditional spell-check.

It looks at how sentences behave:
• repeated sentence starts
• overuse of "to be" constructions
• one-note rhythm
• stacked clauses that blur the point

A high Mechanics score usually means intentional variation and a cadence that feels chosen.
A low Mechanics score can mean the prose is mechanically correct but rhythmically dull, or tangled in a way that hides meaning.

Risk: assertiveness & distinctiveness

Accepted Answer

Risk measures how assertive, opinionated, or stylistically distinctive the writing is.

High score (70%+)
The writing takes a stand. The voice is sharper, the phrasing is less standardized, and the piece may provoke a stronger reaction depending on the audience.

Low score (around 20%)
The writing is safer and more conventional. It is typically clearer and less likely to be challenged for tone.

Note for experimental writers:
If the work is edgy on purpose, a higher Risk score is not a warning. It is confirmation of intensity. If this metric is not useful, Risk can be toggled OFF in Settings.

What is Deep Trace?

Deep Trace is Thanis's archive-aware pattern analysis layer for writers.

A normal scan looks at one draft. Deep Trace also looks at earlier saved work in your Studio archive and pulls historical proof from those pieces.

Its job is to:
• identify recurring writing habits
• show where those habits appear in earlier work
• explain why they matter to the reader
• give you a concrete next move without rewriting the draft for you

Deep Trace is not a ghostwriter. It is closer to a forensic editor that remembers your tendencies over time.

How is Deep Trace different from a normal Thanis analysis?

A normal Thanis analysis evaluates one draft in isolation.

Deep Trace looks for repeat habits across your saved writing.

That means it can catch patterns like:

Standard Thanis tells you what this draft is doing.
Deep Trace tells you what you tend to do across drafts.

Does Deep Trace rewrite my work?

No.

Deep Trace is designed to improve a draft without rewriting it for you.

It identifies the pattern, shows proof from earlier pieces, explains the reader cost, and gives you a short next-step test to run in revision.

That is intentional. The goal is to sharpen your choices without flattening your voice.

Deep Trace is built to be specific, not overwhelming.

How should I use Deep Trace in revision?

Use Deep Trace after you already have a real draft.

The best workflow is:
1. Draft freely.
2. Run Deep Trace.
3. Pick one pattern only.
4. Test the suggested move in one section.
5. Re-read aloud and keep only what genuinely improves the piece.

Do not try to fix everything in one pass. Deep Trace is most useful when it helps you make one sharp decision at a time.

Is Deep Trace looking only at this document?

No.

Deep Trace uses the current draft as context, but its proof is pulled from earlier saved writing in your archive.

That said, it is best understood as archive-aware rather than mathematically exhaustive. It is designed to surface recurring habits using historical evidence from prior pieces, not to produce a total statistical map of every sentence you have ever written.

How rubric support works

Rubric support gives Thanis more context for the kind of paper you are trying to write.

If you have a rubric, you can upload it before you analyze the draft. If you do not, you can still describe the assignment, choose the writing type, and set the goals you want Thanis to pay attention to.

The point is not to trap the draft inside a formula. The point is to make the feedback answer the actual assignment in front of you, not some generic version of “good writing.”

Do I need a rubric to use Academic mode?

No.

Rubric upload is optional. Academic mode still works without it.

If you do not have a rubric, Thanis can still read the draft in light of the assignment description, the writing type, and the goals you set. The rubric just gives the analysis one more layer of context.

What does rubric support actually change?

Accepted Answer

It changes the frame of the reading.

Without assignment context, Thanis is asking whether the draft is clear, coherent, and structurally sound. With rubric support, it can ask a sharper question: is this draft doing the kind of work this assignment is asking for?

That can shape the feedback across clarity, structure, evidence and integrity, mechanics, and overall considerations or risk. Not because the rubric replaces judgment, but because it gives the judgment somewhere real to stand.

What’s the best workflow for a student?

Start with a real draft.

Then:
Create the academic project.

Do not try to satisfy every line of feedback in one pass. That is how revision turns into noise. The better move is to fix what is most likely to change the way the paper reads.

Can Thanis help with a paper without writing it for me?

Yes.

That is exactly where it is most useful.

Thanis can show where the draft drifts, where the reader loses the thread, where evidence is thin, and where the structure is doing less work than you think. It does not need to generate the paper to help you improve it.

Does rubric support replace the instructor’s judgment?

No.

It helps you see where the draft may or may not be meeting the expectations of the assignment. That is useful. It is not the same thing as a final grade.

The instructor still decides what the paper ultimately earns. Thanis helps you arrive there with fewer blind spots.

No.

Grammarly reviews writing correction — whether a sentence is technically correct, whether wording could be stronger. Thanis Executive reviews communication judgment — whether the message is doing what a leader needs it to do.

Grammar only matters when it interferes with the communication. If a sentence is technically clean but the reasoning underneath it is hollow, Thanis Executive will surface that. If a sentence has a small grammar issue but the message is doing its job, Thanis Executive will not interrupt.

Grammarly asks:
• Is the sentence correct?
• Is the wording stronger?
